MAY Events in Key West

May is one of the most amazing months to visit, and here are some reasons why: tourist season is coming to a close, so the island is uncrowded… the weather is glorious and clear…and there are amazing bright orange blooms all around from the Poinciana trees gracing this beautiful island. But the best reason of all? Because there are some unbelievable events coming up that only happen in May in glorious Key West!

Key West Songwriters Festival

The 20th-annual showcase of musical magic features America’s foremost performing songwriters, with concerts staged in intimate, audience-friendly island settings.

Waterfront Playhouse presents: Me and Jezebel April 29 – May 16

When Bette Davis shows up at a Connecticut household, her one-night stay turns into a month of hilarious chaos. “The story is delightful, the writing is entertaining, and what comes out of Bette’s mouth is priceless.” (New York Post) Showtime 8 p.m.

Red Barn Theatre presents: Venus in Fur April 29 – May 23

This smash Broadway hit is a laugh-out-loud study of the politics of sex that’s guaranteed to mesmerize. An actress comes late to an audition for a less-than impressed director, but she soon turns the session into a tango for dominance.

Key West Air, Land & Sea Poker Run May 14 – 17

Presented by the Florida Powerboat Club, fans and aficionados can join a unique motorsports event as participants from around the United States can enjoy up to five days of motoring, boating and flying fun in tropical paradise. Featuring group rallies from Miami to Key West by air, land and by sea. See the cars, boats and motorbikes on display at the Poker Run Village, located at the Conch Republic Seafood Company, Friday 4 – 10 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free to the public.

Kamp Key West May 14 – 17

This second annual event is designed for LGBTA outdoor enthusiasts and adventurists who fondly remember all the fun and games of summer camp, with on-the-water tropical island activities and games for adults.

Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational May 22 – 23

In this challenge headquartered at Conch Republic Seafood Company, more than $15,000 awaits the angler scoring the highest total combined weight of three dolphin catches. Many additional prizes await other top anglers, and there is no limit on the number of participating boats. Registration is Friday, at Conch Republic Seafood Co.,631 Greene St. Fishing Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Sunset Celebration Welcomes Tall Ships May 22 – 25

Visitors to Key West’s famed Mallory Square can enjoy an attraction beyond the waterfront pier’s famed nightly Sunset Celebration: touring the U.S.C.G.C. Eagle, a historic 295-foot sailing barque used as a Coast Guard training vessel. The presence of the Eagle, called “America’s tall ship,” highlights a long weekend blending seafaring tradition with performances, artistry and more. Friday through Sunday, the fun is to extend from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and feature free tours of the Eagle. Events are to conclude when the Eagle departs Mallory Square Monday, May 25.

Key West Ladies’ Dolphin Championship May 30

Female anglers can vie for $10,000 in cash and prizes during the 2015 Mercury Marine Ladies Dolphin Championship. Scheduled Saturday, May 30, the event offers prizes for the winning boat team and top five individual anglers. The angler who catches the heaviest dolphin during the daylong tournament earns a $3,000 cash purse. The second-place angler is to receive $1,500 cash, while $500 awaits the third-place finisher and prizes reward the fourth- and fifth-place participants. Proceeds are to benefit the Jose Wejebe “Spanish Fly” Memorial Foundation.
