Key West The Right Way
6 Top Ways to DO Key West on a BUDGET!
So you want to go to Key West but think you can’t afford it? We think you can! Read on for the how to’s! Top 6 Ways to DO KEY WEST on a BUDGET!
1. COME TO KEY WEST DURING THE OFF SEASON
We can’t say it enough. The off-season here rocks, and a lot of people don’t even realize how much cheaper it is. The official off season is April-December, but we think the best three months to visit are May, September and early October. Why? Everything is cheaper, less crowded, and the deals abound. Airfare and hotel lodging are also on the cheap. You will be shocked at the amount of money you can save on an off-season trip—so much so that you might just come back AGAIN with all the money you saved!
2. SLEEP OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Hotel lodging can make or break the bank, depending on where you stay. One of our best insider tips is to stay in a hotel or motel that is not on Duval Street (the main street in Key West) or next to a big attraction like the boardwalk or Southernmost point. In other words, find a hotel off the beaten path, or better yet, stay in a guesthouse! A guest house is a phenomenal way to save money, as well as add intimacy and charm to your visit. There are a slew of B&Bs, guest houses and family-owned inns to choose from. CLICK HERE to See some Key West Hotels.
3. INDULGE IN THE FREEBIES
There are a gazillion things free things to do in Key West. From the sunset celebration in Mallory Square, strolling Duval Street, visiting the Key West Wildlife Center, and throwing a Frisbee nekkid at the beach (you may get in trouble, but people do it!). hey weren’t kidding when they said some of the best things in life are free.
4. MANGIA IN SEPTEMBER!
Shhh… Here’s a little-known, insider secret: September restaurants in Key West have killer dining specials. If you come here for the food alone, you will save a bundle. A few notable September deals: Tavern in Town (at the Marriott Key West Beachside) has a happy hour dinner special – everything (yes we said everything!) on their menu is $19.99, including steak and seafood!. Azur Restaurant has a September special $6 menu. Come on, dinner for six bucks? What’s not to love? That’s five more free margaritas for you! 5. DRIVE...OR TAKE THE FERRY
You can take a ferry from Fort Myers Beach to Key West. Why drive if you can do this? Withplenty of seats, a bar stocked with bevvies, snacks and food, and even multiple TVs in the off-chance the breathtaking view is a bore!
6. DO WHAT THE KEY WEST LOCALS DO!
Everyone that has done even a little internet research on Key West knows about Duval Street, the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration, and the Ernest Hemingway House. Those are must-sees! But we think the best way to save money and have a blast is to walk in the shoes of the locals. Dig a little deeper in your research (and check out THIS web site!!) for some cool, lesser-known adventures like the wacky Key West Cemetery, West Martello Tower, the unmarked home of Tennessee Williams, free Higgs Beach, and free wine and cheese gallery openings. So come on down on a budget! The weather in Key West is HOT. The beers are cold. The pools are heaven. The nightlife is a fantasy. You don’t have to be a billionaire to visit Paradise. You just have to visit.
