1. Mallory Square Sunset Celebration

Every night about 2 hours before sunset, sun-kissed vacationers and townies gather at Mallory

Square Dock for a nightly arts festival. You can stroll along the dock and exhibit arts and crafts, street performers, psychics, and people watching. Then, watch the breathtaking sun descend over the Gulf of Mexico. Priceless.

2. Smather’s Beach

We all come to Key West for the sun and sand, right? Well, the beach is where it’s at. Grab your sunscreen, a hat, and towel, and head on over to Smather’s Beach. It’s a small beach, but there is always a good time to be had – from volley ball games and Frisbee, to just digging your toes in the sand and gazing out at the bright blue horizon.

3. Rollerblade along the Atlantic

Pack up your skates! Key West is a roller-blader’s paradise. The amazing oceanfront views are the perfect setting for jamming some tunes in your earphones and getting your skate on. And if you don’t have skates, you can rent some for super cheap at many of the bike rental locations.

4. Read a Book

Key West was home to one of the greatest writers of all-time, Ernest Hemingway. The island has a literary history and a great public library, so why not check out a book he wrote right here in Key West? It’s a perfect way to laze away an afternoon, and rest up for a night of partying.

5. Chill at the Pool

You paid for the room, so why not take advantage of your hotel digs and chill at the pool? Work on your tan, listen to some tunes in your ear buds, or catch up on your book (see number 4!). It’s the perfect way to spend a hot, sunny day on this glorious, magical little island. 

6. Stroll Duval Street

Duval Street is the main drag in town, and stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. There are plenty of bars, pubs, eateries, and shops, but also lots of pretty bungaloes, mansions, and architecture to view.

3 Conch Train

This classic sightseeing train has been around long enough to give Key West legend Ernest Hemingway a ride! 7 Audubon House

This gorgeous place has a fantastic guided tour for kids and adults both. You can view the works of famous artist and naturalist, John James Audubon, which are displayed throughout the house. The building was home to a famous 19^th-Century Key West captain, Captain John H. Geiger, and you can experience what life was like back then as you walk through rooms filled with exquisite antique furnishings and architecture. The home also boasts lush and flamboyant tropical gardens, including a spectacular Koi fishpond and 1850's medicinal/herbal garden.

8 Key West Aquarium

This charming little aquarium was built during the Great Depression way back in 1935, and was the first of its kind. A great tour for kids, this aquarium hosts a 30-minute, interactive walking tour, where visitors can feed stingrays, and even touch a shark on the tail!

9 Shipwreck Museum

“Wreck Ashore!” These are the words called out in the 1800s when a shipwreck touched shore. Back in the “Golden Age of Sailing,” Key West was home to some of the bravest sailors in treacherous waters – which means it was one of the capitols of shipwrecks. Visitors can see artifacts from actual shipwrecks, hear lore, and exciting tales from guides that look like the pioneers of old Key West!

10 Custom House

This is a history buff’s dream. For only 9 bucks, you can tour this 1891, four-story national landmark building, which used to be home to the island’s district courts, post office and custom’s office. You know the old saying, it isn’t about the destination, it’s about the journey? Well that even applies when you are planning a vacation to the most beautiful party capital in the world, Key West!

Yes, there are certainly some beautiful places to see from behind the wheel in this four-climate country of ours. For example, the Maine Coast is not to be missed if you are planning to be in the Northeast. With rocky shores, and pretty old lighthouses dotting the coast, along with plenty of bird and boat watching, this is Old New England at its finest. Another incredible journey to make is the California coast: from Redwood Highway, to Yosemite, and beyond, the sights in the sunny, blue-sky state are sure to make for a memorable ride. And of course the red rocks of Arizona are a winner, if you want to get a cruise-the-open-road, Thelma and Louise kind of vibe.

But let’s be honest: the most stunning, jaw-dropping view that is sure to take your breath away is the drive along the Overseas Highway http://www.fla-keys.com/highway.cfm as you make your way to Key West. This 110-mile highway actually runs the length of the Keys, and you can drive to every single island if you are so inclined. So if you are flying into Miami, do yourself a favor and rent a convertible at the airport, put the top down, your shades on, blast some tunes, and put the pedal to the metal. You will remember your journey into Key West forever.

You won’t know how many different shades of blue there are until you see the ocean change along this route—from brilliant turquoise, to sparkling aqua, to seafoam green—the panoramic view from the Overseas Highway will knock your flip flops off.

This isn’t a drive to take if you are in a hurry and just want to be there. This trip, nicknamed “the Magic Carpet Ride,” is to be savored from the first hour to the last—and count on a three to four-hour ride from Miami to Key West. And if you are driving at sunset, forget it; you could cry it’s so gorgeous (but don’t do that, because party central awaits you!) That giant, glorious orange ball of the sun will slowly descend into the brilliant blue sea, sending strands of purple, pink, and yellow up into a sky that sparkles with a million twinkling stars.
